Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) education is an important part of life at Hadleigh High School.

We enhance the social development of our students by:

Developing a range of social skills in different contexts, including working and socialising with pupils from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. E.g. we teach many of our lessons in mixed ability groups with success; we offer students mock interviews with local community employers and our Y8 students participate in ’World Day’.
Engendering a willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social settings. E.g. our Year 10 students raise money for local charities by organising a summer fete; our Health and Social students visit our local geriatric and nursery care providers.
Fostering an acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, law and individual liberty. E.g. PSHE lessons explore the English court system; History lessons regularly deal with personal liberty and equality; our 'year councils and student union is very active in seeking the views of our students and acting upon them.
Promoting mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. E.g. English study a range of texts from different cultures and historical periods which foster discussions on different beliefs and; the pastoral system at Hadleigh High has protocols in place to re-educate those who display intolerant attitudes about race, faith or gender.

We enhance the cultural development of students by:

Improving our students’ understanding and appreciation of the wide range of influences that have shaped the UK’s heritage and that of others. E.g. in Geography we consider what Britishness is and its evolving nature; in our Art lessons we consider local, British and International artists.
Deepening our students’ understanding and appreciation of the range of different cultures within modern Britain. E.g. in Science we consider how different cultures view the ethical dilemmas in technological developments like GM food and IVF.
Teaching about Britain's democratic parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain. E.g. in our lessons about the democratic process in PSHE and History.
Encouraging our students to participate in and respond positively to artistic, sporting and cultural opportunities E.g. school trips to galleries, fixtures and the theatre; we have been at the forefront of the support for the Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts; we have developed our rugby league team to the point where they reached the National cup semi-finals; our student leadership programme and our house system both create a high level of social interaction across all five year groups as well as elsewhere in the community.
