Homework / Revision
At Hadleigh High School, we see homework as an important part of the learning process. Well-designed home learning gives students the opportunity to consolidate what they have learned in the classroom, strengthen their recall, practise key skills and develop the independence needed for successful study.
We believe that quality is more important than quantity. Homework should be purposeful, accessible and worthwhile, rather than simply being additional work for students to complete. Our approach therefore focuses on helping students to revisit and secure important knowledge while developing effective habits for independent study.
Work Hard Strategies
For this reason, we have introduced our Work Hard Strategies. These provide students with a consistent set of approaches that they can use both at home and in school to support their learning.
Our strategies include:
- Self-Quizzing
- Dual Coding
- Write to Learn
- Brain Dump
When students join us in Year 7, these strategies are explicitly taught during the first term. Form Tutors introduce a strategy during their Monday tutor session, and students then use that strategy when completing their homework during the week.
As the term progresses, students are encouraged to reflect on the strategies they have used and consider which approaches help them to learn most effectively. By the end of the term, students have developed a toolkit of independent study strategies that they can draw upon throughout their time at Hadleigh High School.
The strategies are also used within lessons as part of retrieval practice, which is an important feature of our knowledge-led curriculum. Regularly recalling information from memory helps students to strengthen their understanding and retain important knowledge over time.

Knowledge Organisers and GCSE Resources
We provide students with carefully selected resources to support their homework, assessment preparation and independent study.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, students use Knowledge Organisers to support their homework and prepare for their termly assessments. Knowledge Organisers contain the essential knowledge, key vocabulary and important information that students need to learn for each subject.
Students are encouraged to use their Knowledge Organisers actively alongside the Work Hard Strategies to retrieve, practise and check their knowledge.

Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, students have access to subject-specific Padlets containing the resources and information they need to support their homework and prepare for their GCSE examinations.
The Padlets provide a central location for students to access revision materials, key learning resources, examination guidance and other subject-specific information. Students can use these resources both at home and in school to support their independent study.
Links to the Key Stage 4 Padlets can be found below. Students can access and download the resources they need directly from each Padlet.
